Description

Hot-headed, distractible, energetic, and friendly, Franklin is known in his community as a ray of sunshine, always doing his best to bring light into other people's lives. Behind that sunny disposition, though, is a history of trauma and turmoil. His father, Alex, completed suicide during a bipolar mixed episode when Franklin was 15, leaving him under the stewardship of his father's partner, Max. His suicide brought with it intense trauma and grief, which Franklin still grapples with four years later. However, overall, things have gotten better for him.

Just when he feels he's gotten over the worst of it, though, a few months after his 19th birthday, he grows more irritable, sleeps less if at all, loses track of his own thoughts as they race faster and faster, and, eventually, hears voices that others can't. He seeks out thrills wherever he can in dangerous ways, stealing mood-altering substances from loved ones and performing dangerous stunts like climbing the outsides of buildings bare-handed. With his increasingly reckless behavior endangering both himself and others, Max brings Franklin to the community health center, where he's diagnosed with bipolar 1--the same diagnosis as his father--put on medication, and kept under watch by at least one person at all times until he stablizes.

Franklin's World starts right after this point, following Franklin as he struggles to come to terms with his diagnosis and bristles at Max, who has always struggled to take care of Franklin and who seems to treat him differently following his diagnosis. He fears that Max only sees Alex when he looks at him. In a way, he's right--but not in the way that he thinks.
